Organic Bacopa Powder: Whole Leaf or Extract Capsules, Which Suits You?

A bacopa powder label prints 1,000mg per serving while the capsule beside it prints 7,500mg, and the two numbers are not measuring the same thing. In plain terms: Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder is the milled whole herb, one ingredient, organic Bacopa monnieri powder (100%), a quarter-teaspoon (1g) serving, 250 servings in a 250g pouch, £15.99 at the time of writing [2]. This guide explains what 1,000mg of whole leaf means next to an extract figure, shows who the powder suits and who the capsules suit, breaks down the cost per serving, and covers how to mix and store it, so you can choose the right format.

Which Bacopa Is Right for You?

If you want to stir it into food or a drink

Choose the powder. Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder 250g is the whole ground leaf, so you decide the amount and you taste it: the label serving is a quarter teaspoon (1g) mixed into 150ml of water, juice, a shake or a smoothie [2]. The powder is green-brown and distinctly bitter. Blend it into a mango or banana smoothie, whisk it into warm milk with honey and a pinch of cinnamon, or stir it into porridge or yoghurt; add the powder before the liquid so it does not float, use a dry spoon and keep the pouch sealed.

If you would rather swallow a measured capsule

Choose the extract capsules. The same plant is sold as a standardised extract in one capsule a day: Organic Bacopa Extract 7500mg, 90 Capsules (a 15:1 extract, 100mg bacosides, £9.99) and Organic Bacopa Extract 15,000mg, 60 Capsules (a 30:1 extract, 250mg bacosides, £14.99) [4][5]. Our bacopa extract guide compares the two strengths and works through the ratio and bacoside maths, so this guide does not repeat it.

If you compare the herb amount rather than the headline

Compare like with like. The powder’s 1,000mg is the weight of dried leaf in the spoon. A capsule’s 7,500mg is a herb equivalent: 500mg of concentrated extract that was made from 7,500mg of herb. So one capsule stands for more herb than one spoon of powder, while the powder gives you the whole leaf, unconcentrated.

If you want certified organic and a single ingredient

Both formats give you both. The powder’s ingredients list is one line, Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder (100%), with no fillers, binders or additives [2]; the pouch front prints the organic leaf with the control code SK-BIO-003, non-EU agriculture, 1000mg per serving and food supplement.

What does 1,000mg per serving mean on a bacopa powder label?

The nutrition panel on the pouch says: serving size ¼ tsp (1g); servings per container 250; organic Bacopa monnieri 1,000mg; no NRV established [2]. One number, and it is the simplest one a herbal label can print: the weight of dried, milled leaf in the spoon.

Nutritional information panel of Alpha01 Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder 250g: serving size ¼ tsp (1g), 250 servings, organic Bacopa monnieri 1,000mg, no NRV established

Whole leaf is not an extract. An extract label carries two more numbers: a ratio, such as 15:1, meaning fifteen parts of dried herb were concentrated down to one part of extract, and a standardisation, such as 20% bacosides, meaning the extract is prepared so that a fixed percentage of that marker compound is guaranteed in every batch. Bacosides are a group of triterpenoid saponins that laboratories measure to identify the plant and to standardise extracts [1]. A raw leaf powder is the whole ground herb, so it carries neither number: nothing has been concentrated, and no bacoside percentage is declared.

Powder: ¼ teaspoon = 1g = 1,000mg of dried leaf, nothing concentrated. Extract capsule: 7,500mg of herb ÷ 15 = 500mg of extract, standardised to 20% = 100mg of bacosides. Price: £15.99 ÷ 250 servings = 6.4p a serving, or £6.40 per 100g; the 7,500mg capsule is £9.99 ÷ 90 = 11p a day.

The label maths

Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder, nutrition panel [2]

The panel prints one number because the pouch holds one thing: the whole leaf, milled, with nothing concentrated. If you want a declared bacoside figure, that is what the capsules are for; if you want the leaf itself, the powder is the only format that gives it.

How to compare bacopa powder and capsules by the label

Five lines settle any bacopa label: the botanical name, the ingredients list, the grams or milligrams per serving, whether it is whole leaf or an extract with a ratio and a bacoside percentage, and the pack price divided by the number of servings. The table applies them to our range; prices are at the time of writing.

PRODUCT
WHAT THE LABEL DECLARES

1g (¼ teaspoon) of milled whole leaf = 1,000mg · no ratio, no bacoside percentage · 250 servings

Choose if you want the herb itself to stir into drinks and to set your own amount · single ingredient · certified organic · £15.99 for 250 servings: about 6p a serving

500mg of 15:1 extract = 7,500mg of herb equivalent · 20% bacosides = 100mg · 90 servings

Choose if you want a measured capsule with the bacoside figure printed on the panel · hypromellose shell, organic brown rice flour · £9.99 for 90 servings: 11p a day

500mg of 30:1 extract = 15,000mg of herb equivalent · 50% bacosides = 250mg · 60 servings

Choose if you want the higher bacoside figure in the same single capsule · hypromellose shell · £14.99 for 60 servings: 25p a day

By herb weight, one 7,500mg capsule stands for seven and a half quarter-teaspoons of powder, and costs more per day. What the powder gives you instead is the unconcentrated leaf, control of the amount, and the lowest price per serving of the three.

The powder sits in our herbal powders range with the other single-ingredient organic powders we sell.

What is Bacopa monnieri?

Bacopa monnieri, also called brahmi or water hyssop, is a small, creeping wetland perennial of the plantain family (Plantaginaceae). It grows in warm wetlands and along the edges of ponds and rice fields across the tropics and subtropics, is native to India and Australia, and has been described in Indian texts since around the sixth century AD [1]. The whole aerial plant, mainly the leaves and stems, is what is harvested, dried and milled into powder.

The pouch front prints Organic Brahmi Powder with the botanical name Bacopa monnieri beneath it, and that second line matters: in India the name brahmi is also used for Centella asiatica, the plant sold as gotu kola. The botanical name on the label is what tells the two apart.

How to take and store bacopa powder

The label direction, in its words: take ¼ teaspoon (1g) of powder per day, mixed into 150ml of water, juice, shakes or smoothies; please note, in our effort to reduce plastic waste, this product does not contain a scoop [2]. Measure with your own teaspoon; at one serving a day a pouch lasts 250 days, a little over eight months.

Storage, in the label's words: store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight; keep out of reach of young children [2].

The pouch reseals, so keep it closed between uses, away from steam and heat, and use the powder before the date printed on the pack.

Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder FAQs

1. What is organic bacopa monnieri powder made from?

The dried, milled leaf of Bacopa monnieri, a creeping wetland herb of the plantain family, and nothing else: the ingredients list reads Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder (100%). It is the whole leaf rather than an extract.

2. How much bacopa powder a day, and how long does a pouch last?

The label serving is a quarter teaspoon (1g) once a day, mixed into 150ml of water, juice, a shake or a smoothie. A 250g pouch holds 250 of those servings, so at the labelled amount it lasts 250 days. There is no scoop in the pouch, so measure with your own teaspoon. The label says not to exceed the recommended daily dose, that the product is not intended for children, or pregnant or breastfeeding women, and to consult a doctor before use if you have a medical condition or are taking any medications [2].

3. What does bacopa powder taste like, and how do I mix it?

It is green-brown and distinctly bitter. Add the powder to the glass or bowl before the liquid so it does not float, then blend it into a smoothie, whisk it into warm milk with honey and cinnamon, or stir it into porridge or yoghurt. Use a dry spoon and reseal the pouch straight after.

4. Is bacopa the same as brahmi?

Brahmi is the name used in India for Bacopa monnieri, but the same name is also used for a different plant, Centella asiatica, sold as gotu kola. Our pouch prints both names, Organic Brahmi Powder and Bacopa monnieri, so you know which plant is in it; on any other label, look for the botanical name.

5. Is bacopa powder vegan?

Yes. The only ingredient is the Bacopa monnieri leaf, so nothing in the pouch is of animal origin.

6. Does bacopa have an authorised health claim in the UK?

No. The Great Britain Nutrition and Health Claims Register is the only list of what a UK food supplement may claim, and it has no entry for bacopa, brahmi or Bacopa monnieri [3].

7. Should I choose the powder or the extract capsules?

Choose the powder if you want the whole leaf, to mix it into food or drink and to set your own amount at about 6p a serving. Choose the capsules if you want a measured daily dose with a declared bacoside figure and no taste: 100mg of bacosides in the 7,500mg capsule or 250mg in the 15,000mg capsule, one a day. Our bacopa extract guide compares the two capsule strengths.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Choose Organic Bacopa Monnieri Powder if you want the whole ground leaf, one ingredient, to stir into food or drink at about 6p a serving.

Choose Organic Bacopa Extract 7500mg if you want a measured capsule with 100mg of bacosides declared and a 90-day pouch.

Choose Organic Bacopa Extract 15,000mg if you want 250mg of bacosides in the same single capsule.
