Barley Grass Capsules vs Powder: Which Organic Barley Grass Suits You?

A barley grass capsule label carries one line: organic barley grass, 1,500mg per serving. That one line is the whole young leaf, with nothing concentrated. In plain terms: Organic Barley Grass 1500mg is the young leaf of the barley plant, dried and milled, filled into vegan capsules at 500mg each; three a day is 1,500mg, and the 90-capsule pouch is 30 days for £5.99 [3]. This guide explains what that single line means and works out the price per day against our 200g, 500g and 1kg powders.

Barley grass capsules at a glance

Suits you if you want a measured 1.5g of organic barley grass leaf a day in capsules rather than a spoon of green powder in a drink.

Per serving: 3 capsules = 1,500mg of organic barley grass powder, 500mg per capsule; no NRV established, because a Nutrient Reference Value (the daily amount UK labels use for vitamins and minerals) does not exist for a leaf powder.

Format: hypromellose (plant-based, vegan) capsule; three ingredients; a 90-capsule pouch is 30 days. The same powder is sold loose in 200g, 500g and 1kg pouches.

Price per serving: £5.99 for 30 servings, 20p a serving; the loose powder works out at about 3p to 4.5p per 1.5g, at the time of writing.

Which Barley Grass Is Right for You?

Capsules or loose powder: which format suits you?

The capsule is the measured option; the powder is the flexible one. Three capsules of Organic Barley Grass 1500mg hold 1.5g of leaf powder, roughly half a level teaspoon of the loose product, with no taste and nothing to mix, at 20p a day [3]. The loose powder's label direction is to add it to water, juice, shakes or smoothies, so you set your own amount, and the price per 1.5g falls from about 4.5p in the 200g pouch to about 3p in the 1kg; our organic barley grass powder guide covers the powder's own label in full.

Leaf powder or extract: what the label tells you

Ours is the whole leaf, not an extract. An extract label prints a ratio (10:1, say, meaning ten parts of dried plant were concentrated to one part of extract) and, if the extract is standardised, a percentage of a named marker compound. A whole-leaf label prints the weight of milled leaf and nothing else, because nothing was concentrated. To compare a 1,500mg leaf powder with an extract that prints a large "equivalent" figure, ask the same question of both: what weight of material is actually in the capsule?

Barley grass or wheatgrass?

The two cereal grasses sit side by side in our range. Organic Wheat Grass 2100mg is the young leaf of wheat (Triticum aestivum) at 2,100mg per three capsules, 700mg per capsule, 30 servings for £5.99, the same 20p a day; its filler is organic hemp flour rather than brown rice flour [3]. Both are the whole leaf of a young cereal grass, cut before the grain forms. Our wheatgrass powder guide covers the loose wheatgrass.

Reading the label carefully

Three lines tell you what you are buying. The nutritional information panel (on ours, organic barley grass 1,500mg per three capsules, no NRV established), the ingredients list (organic barley grass powder, hypromellose shell, organic brown rice flour, nothing else) and the directions [3]. Our panel gives the weight of whole leaf in every serving, so compare panel against panel, not front against front.

What does 1,500mg per serving mean on the label?

The nutritional information panel on the pouch says: serving size 3 capsules; servings per container 30; Organic Barley Grass 1,500mg; no NRV established [3]. That is the whole panel.

Nutritional information panel of Alpha01 Organic Barley Grass 1500mg: serving size 3 capsules, 30 servings, Organic Barley Grass 1,500mg, no NRV established

The 1,500mg on the panel is the weight of whole young leaf in every serving. Divide by three capsules and each holds 500mg of milled dried young leaf. There is no ratio to multiply and no percentage to apply, because the powder was never concentrated. "No NRV established" appears because a Nutrient Reference Value exists only for vitamins and minerals, and the capsule panel declares none.

3 capsules = 1,500mg = 1.5g of leaf powder, roughly half a level teaspoon. 90 capsules ÷ 3 = 30 days; £5.99 ÷ 30 = 20p a day. The loose powder at the same 1.5g a day: 200g is about 133 servings, 4.5p each; 500g about 333 servings, 4.5p; 1kg about 667 servings, 3.3p.

The label maths

Organic Barley Grass 1500mg and Organic Barley Grass Powder, nutrition panels [3]

The ingredients list is three lines [3]:

• Organic Barley Grass Powder: the only active ingredient, the whole dried young leaf, milled; 500mg per capsule.

• Capsule Shell (Hypromellose): a plant-derived cellulose shell rather than gelatin.

• Organic Brown Rice Flour: the filler.

How to compare barley grass capsules and powders by the label

Every green-leaf label breaks down into the same steps: check whether it is whole leaf or an extract; find the grams per serving and how many capsules make a serving; read any nutrients actually declared on the panel; read the shell and filler lines; divide the pack price by the number of servings. The table applies those steps to our range; prices are at the time of writing.

What is barley grass and how is it grown?

Barley grass is the young green leaf and stem of the barley plant, Hordeum vulgare, cut while the plant is still producing leaves and side shoots, before the stem lengthens, the plant flowers and the grain develops [1]. Barley itself is a cereal crop grown for its grain [1], and the leaf powder is a different product.

The product page describes ours as "made from the growing shoots and leaves of the young barley plant" and "harvested by hand before the plant forms grains" [3]. The cut leaf is dried and milled to a fine green powder; for the capsules that powder is filled into hypromellose shells with a little organic brown rice flour.

Organic Barley Grass 1500mg sits in our herbal supplements range alongside the loose barley grass powders, the wheatgrass capsules and the other single-ingredient capsules and powders we sell.

How to take barley grass capsules: three a day with water

The label direction, in its words: take 3 capsules daily with water [3]. The label does not say whether to take the three together or spread across the day, or with or without food, so either is consistent with the directions; with 90 capsules in the pouch that is 30 days from one pack. Dried green leaf fades and dulls with light and heat, so keep the resealable pouch closed between uses, away from the hob and the kettle, and use the capsules before the date printed on the pack.

Storage, in the label's words: store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight; keep out of reach of young children [3].

Barley Grass Capsules FAQs

1. Is Organic Barley Grass 1500mg an extract or a whole leaf powder?

A whole leaf powder. The ingredients list reads Organic Barley Grass Powder, so the 1,500mg per three capsules is the weight of milled dried young leaf, not a leaf-equivalent figure worked back from a concentrated extract. That is why the label carries no extract ratio and no standardised marker compound.

2. How many barley grass capsules should I take a day, and how long does a pouch last?

The label direction is three capsules daily with water, so the 90-capsule pouch is a 30-day supply. The label does not say whether to take them together or spread out, or with food. The label also says the capsules are not intended for children, and asks you to check with your doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take medication.

3. Do barley grass capsules contain gluten?

Barley is a gluten-containing cereal. Barley grass is the leaf, cut before the plant forms grain, and the product page lists no allergens; the label carries no gluten-free claim.

4. How many capsules equal a teaspoon of barley grass powder?

Three capsules hold 1.5g of the same organic barley grass powder, which is roughly half a level teaspoon of the loose product. The powder is the cheaper way to take the leaf, from about 3p per 1.5g in the 1kg pouch against 20p for three capsules; the capsules are the measured option.

5. Are the capsules vegan, and what else is in them?

Yes. The capsule shell is hypromellose, a plant-derived cellulose rather than gelatin, and the only other ingredient is organic brown rice flour, so there are no animal-derived ingredients; the pouch front prints "vegan capsules".

6. What do the organic leaf and "non-EU agriculture" on the pouch mean?

The capsule pouch front carries the organic leaf mark with the code SK-BIO-003 and the words "non-EU agriculture"; the powder pouches carry the same mark with the code CN-BIO-140 [3]. The code identifies the control body that certified the product as organic, and "non-EU agriculture" is the required origin statement, meaning the agricultural ingredient was farmed outside the EU.

7. Barley grass or wheatgrass capsules: what is the difference on the label?

The plant and the weight. Barley grass is the young leaf of Hordeum vulgare at 1,500mg per three capsules; wheatgrass is the young leaf of Triticum aestivum at 2,100mg per three. Both are whole-leaf powders in hypromellose shells, both 30 servings for £5.99. The barley capsule uses organic brown rice flour as its filler, the wheatgrass capsule organic hemp flour.

8. Does barley grass have an authorised health claim in the UK?

No. The Great Britain Nutrition and Health Claims Register is the only list of what a UK food supplement may claim, and it has no entry for barley grass or barley leaf; its barley entries concern the grain and carry conditions a leaf powder does not meet [2].
