The name frankincense likely brings to mind the story of the three gifts, where it appeared alongside gold and myrrh. This famous resin comes from the Boswellia serrata tree, a botanical fact you will see noted on our supplement pouch as Indian frankincense [2] [3]. This is often where clarity ends and confusion begins. A quick look at the label reveals two numbers that seem to contradict each other: a prominent 3000mg, and a much smaller 195mg. Understanding the real meaning behind the 3000mg figure is the first step to choosing your supplement with confidence.
Both numbers describe the same single capsule, taken once a day for about 9p [3]. This guide breaks down what each figure means, compares our 3000mg capsule with our organic 7500mg, and helps you find the pouch that fits your routine.

Which boswellia supplement is right for you: 3000mg or organic 7500mg?
Two pouches, about the same price per day, so what’s the difference? Both are one capsule a day and both are standardised to 65% boswellic acid. One gives you more boswellic acid than the other, and one is certified organic.
Boswellia serrata capsules 3000mg: 195mg of boswellic acid
Want boswellia at our lowest price per day? Our Boswellia Serrata 3000mg gives 195mg of boswellic acid in one capsule, and the 90-capsule pouch lasts three months at about 9p a day. There’s a 60-capsule pouch at £5.99 if you’d rather try it first.
Organic boswellia 7500mg: 325mg of boswellic acid
Is organic certification what matters to you? Our Organic Boswellia Serrata 7500mg is part of our organic range and gives you 325mg of boswellic acid in one capsule for about 10p a day. It’s also the cheaper route to boswellic acid, at about 3p per 100mg against about 5p.

Boswellia 3000mg on the label: what 10:1 and 65% boswellic acid mean
Right, this is the bit that trips people up: neither number on the front is the amount of powder in the capsule. 3000mg is a resin equivalent. The resin has been concentrated, a bit like boiling down a sauce: a 10:1 extract turns 10 parts of resin into 1 part, so 3,000mg of resin becomes 300mg of extract.

3,000mg ÷ 10 = 300mg of extract in the capsule · 300mg × 65% = 195mg of boswellic acid · 90 capsules = three months · £7.99 ÷ 90 = about 9p a day · per 100mg of boswellic acid: this capsule about 5p, the organic capsule about 3p.
Boswellia Serrata 3000mg, 90 Capsules, nutrition panel and ingredients [3]
The 65% is the standardisation. It means every batch of extract is made to hold 65% boswellic acid, so 300mg of extract carries the 195mg printed on the front.
Boswellic acid: the number to compare
When you put two brands side by side, skip the resin equivalent and compare the milligrams of boswellic acid. Our own two capsules show why: 3000mg and 7500mg on the fronts, but a clearer 195mg and 325mg on the nutrition panels.
You’ll also see two asterisks on the panel. They mean no Nutrient Reference Value exists for boswellia, so no label can show you a percentage of a daily need.

How to compare any boswellia supplement
Comparing another brand? Find the milligrams of boswellic acid in a daily serving, then the percentage the extract is standardised to. Check how many capsules make a serving, and divide the price by the days in the pouch.
What is boswellia serrata, the Indian frankincense?
It’s a tree. The US National Institutes of Health describes Boswellia serrata as a branching tree native to the mountainous regions of Northern Africa, India and the Middle East [2]. The supplement is an extract made from its gum resin [2].
That resin is the link to the Nativity story: the resin of boswellia trees is the source of frankincense [2]. Our pouch says Indian frankincense for that reason.
How to take boswellia serrata capsules
The label says one capsule daily with water, and it names no time of day. Store the pouch in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and keep it out of reach of young children.
Frankincense, in a label you can read
Decided on the 195mg capsule? The 90-capsule pouch will see you through three months, one capsule a day, at about 9p a day.

Boswellia supplement FAQs
1. What are the benefits of boswellia serrata capsules?
UK law lets a food supplement carry only the health claims authorised on the GB register, and none has been authorised for boswellia or boswellic acids [1]. What the label gives you instead is the exact content of each capsule: 300mg of 10:1 extract with 195mg of boswellic acid, or 325mg in the organic one.
2. Is boswellia 3000mg really in one capsule?
It’s a resin equivalent. A 10:1 extract concentrates 10 parts of resin into 1 part, so the capsule holds 300mg of extract, which stands for 3,000mg of resin.
3. What is boswellic acid?
It’s the group of compounds that boswellia extracts are standardised to. Ours are made to hold 65%, which gives 195mg in one capsule and 325mg in the organic one.
4. Is Indian frankincense the same as boswellia?
Yes. Boswellia serrata is the tree, and the resin of boswellia trees is the source of frankincense [2]. Indian frankincense is printed on the front of our pouch.
5. Is a boswellia supplement safe to take every day?
The label gives a daily amount of one capsule with water, so it’s made for daily use [3]. The US National Institutes of Health says “Boswellia is likely to be safe when taken orally”, and that extract in doses up to 1,000mg daily has been used safely in trials lasting up to 6 months [2]. Our capsules hold 300mg of extract, or 500mg in the organic one [3].
The label adds that the capsules are not intended for children, or pregnant or breastfeeding women, and asks you to consult a doctor before use if you have a medical condition or take any medication [3].
6. Are your boswellia capsules vegan?
Yes. The capsule shell is plant-derived hypromellose, the filler is organic brown rice flour, and the front of the pouch says vegan capsules. All three pouches belong to our vegan range.
7. Can I take boswellia and curcumin together?
Each pouch carries its own directions, so take each as its label says. For boswellia, that’s one capsule daily with water [3]. If our curcumin capsules are on your list too, our curcumin guide explains the numbers on that pouch.
8. Which of your boswellia supplements gives more boswellic acid?
The organic one: 325mg in a capsule against 195mg. It also costs less per 100mg, about 3p against about 5p.
If you want our lowest price per day, choose the Boswellia Serrata 3000mg at about 9p a day. If you’d rather have organic resin and more boswellic acid for your money, choose the Organic Boswellia Serrata 7500mg at about 10p. Either way, you now know to check the boswellic acid, not just the large number on the front.
