Ceylon Cinnamon Capsules: True Cinnamon, Cassia and What 1400mg Means

Examine the cinnamon in your kitchen cupboard, and you will likely find a label that simply reads cinnamon. Yet this familiar name obscures a crucial botanical distinction: the cinnamon sold commercially is primarily sourced from two entirely different tree species [2]. The US National Institutes of Health notes that cinnamon products may not clearly indicate which species has been used [2]. True transparency requires precision. This is why our pouch prominently declares its exact species, Cinnamomum verum, widely known as true Ceylon cinnamon, alongside a 1400mg measurement that merits a clear, factual breakdown.

This guide shows you how to spot true Ceylon cinnamon on a label, what the 1400mg on our pouch means and how two capsules fit your day.

Ceylon cinnamon or cassia cinnamon: which is right for you?

Species first, always. Before you check the amount or the price, find out which cinnamon is in the pouch: they’re different trees, and a label should tell you which one you’re holding.

Ceylon cinnamon capsules: the true cinnamon, milled

Looking for Ceylon specifically? Our Organic Ceylon Cinnamon capsules hold milled Cinnamomum verum bark and nothing extracted. Two give 1,400mg, and the pouch lasts 45 days at about 18p a day.

Cassia cinnamon: the other species, and why it’s labelled differently

Seen a cinnamon extract with a much bigger number? On our own Organic Cinnamon Extract, the 7500mg on the front is a bark equivalent from a 15:1 extract, and the species printed under the name is Cinnamomum cassia. Our cassia cinnamon guide explains that label.

You’ll find the Ceylon capsules in our Ceylon cinnamon range, alongside the rest of our herbal supplements.

Ceylon cinnamon 1400mg on the label: milled bark, two capsules

Right, let’s have a look at the label. 1400mg is simply the milled bark in a serving of two capsules, and there’s no extract maths to do.

Nutritional information panel of Alpha01 Organic Ceylon Cinnamon per 2 capsules: organic Ceylon cinnamon 1,400mg, no NRV established, 45 servings

1,400mg ÷ 2 = 700mg of milled bark in each capsule · 90 capsules ÷ 2 = 45 days · £7.99 ÷ 45 = about 18p a day.

The label maths

Organic Ceylon Cinnamon 1400mg, 90 Capsules, nutrition panel [3]

There’s no ratio and no percentage, because nothing has been extracted. The ingredients list is three lines: organic Ceylon cinnamon powder, a plant-derived capsule shell and organic brown rice flour.

True cinnamon capsules: how to check the species

Read the front first: you’re looking for the botanical name. Cinnamomum verum is Ceylon cinnamon, known as true cinnamon, and Cinnamomum cassia is cassia [2]. A label that says only cinnamon hasn’t told you which; ours names its species on the front, just below the product name [3].

You’ll also see two asterisks on our panel. They mean no Nutrient Reference Value exists for cinnamon, so no label can show you a percentage of a daily need.

Ceylon cinnamon capsules vs cassia cinnamon extract: how they compare

Here are our two organic cinnamon supplements side by side, with the species shown first as the key point of difference. Prices are correct at the time of writing.

Cinnamon supplements: what our two labels tell you

You’ll see the species printed on the front of both pouches, so you know exactly which cinnamon you’re getting before you open the pack [3]. The table above shows you the form, serving and price per day, so you can choose based on what works for you.

What is Ceylon cinnamon, and why is it called true cinnamon?

Two trees, one name. Cinnamon is the dried bark of Cinnamomum trees, and more than one species is sold under the name [2]. Ceylon cinnamon, Cinnamomum verum, is the one known as true cinnamon and grows mainly in Sri Lanka, while cassia comes from south-east Asia [2].

You can tell them apart in the kitchen. Ceylon quills are thin, papery layers rolled up like a cigar, and cassia is one thick, hard curl. If you use the ground bark too, you can read all about it in our Ceylon cinnamon powder guide.

In a capsule you can’t see the difference, which is why the species printed on the label is the thing to read.

How to take Ceylon cinnamon capsules

The label says two capsules daily with water, and it names no time of day. Store the pouch in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, and keep it out of reach of young children.

The true cinnamon, with its name on the front

For true cinnamon with the species clearly named on the front, one pouch gives you a 45-day supply for about 18p a day.

Ceylon cinnamon FAQs

1. What are the benefits of Ceylon cinnamon capsules?

No health claim for cinnamon is authorised in the UK, so we can’t list any, and we don’t [1]. What we can tell you is what’s in two capsules: 1,400mg of milled organic Ceylon cinnamon bark.

2. What is the difference between Ceylon cinnamon and cassia cinnamon?

They’re different species. Ceylon is Cinnamomum verum, known as true cinnamon, and cassia is Cinnamomum cassia [2]. Official guidance notes that Ceylon cinnamon may contain only a trace of coumarin, a natural compound found at higher levels in some cassia products [2].

3. Is Ceylon cinnamon 1400mg in one capsule?

No, in two. Each capsule holds 700mg of milled bark, and the label’s serving is two capsules daily with water.

4. Can I take Ceylon cinnamon capsules every day?

Yes. The label gives a daily amount, two capsules with water, so it is made for daily use; just don’t take more than the label says [3].

5. Are your Ceylon cinnamon capsules organic and vegan?

Yes. You can see both on the front of the pouch, which prints the organic leaf mark and the words vegan capsules [3]. The shell is hypromellose and the filler is organic brown rice flour, and you’ll find the capsules in both our organic and vegan ranges.

6. Can I take Ceylon cinnamon when pregnant?

If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition or take any medication, the label asks you to consult a doctor before use, and it says the product isn’t intended for children [3].

7. Which species is in your cinnamon supplements?

It’s named on the front of each pouch. Our 1400mg capsules are Cinnamomum verum, also known as true Ceylon cinnamon, while our 7,500mg extract is Cinnamomum cassia [3]. Whichever you choose, you know which cinnamon you’re taking.

8. How long does a pouch of Ceylon cinnamon capsules last?

The pouch holds 90 capsules and the serving is two, so 45 days. The front of the pouch prints that figure too.

So, is it Ceylon you want?

If it is, the Organic Ceylon Cinnamon capsules give 1,400mg of milled true cinnamon for about 18p a day, with the species printed on the front.
