Ginger Root Capsules 1400mg: Label Facts, Dose & Price

Nobody knows exactly where ginger began. The plant has been grown in south-east Asia for so long that its wild origin is lost, and by the time Marco Polo met it in China and Sumatra in the 13th century and carried it home to Europe, it was already an old companion of people [2]. The plant is modest, about two feet tall with yellow flowers, and everything that matters lies underground: the knobbly rhizome, lifted after four or five months to be eaten fresh, or after eight to ten months to be dried [2]. Its heat and its aroma come from a small family of compounds called gingerols, and drying turns some of them into shogaols [2].

Our pouches put that rhizome in a capsule in two ways, and each label reads differently: 1,400mg of whole root in two capsules, or 7,500mg in a single capsule from 15:1 extract, providing 25mg gingerols [4]. This guide starts with the whole-root capsules and walks you through the label facts, the daily dose and the price of each pouch, so you can choose the one that fits your day.

What is ginger? The rhizome of Zingiber officinale

Ginger gives its name to its plant family, the Zingiberaceae, and the part we use is the rhizome, an underground stem rather than a true root [2]. NCCIH puts its range in one sentence: “Ginger is native to the warm parts of Asia and is now grown in parts of South America, Africa, and the Middle East.” [3]

Fresh ginger and dried: why extracts start from the dried root

Gingerol, shogaol and zingerone together make up only 1 to 3% of fresh ginger by weight, with a volatile oil adding to the aroma [2]. The most plentiful is 6-gingerol, with 8-gingerol and 10-gingerol beside it, and the dried rhizome is the one used for extraction, because it keeps longer and yields more of these compounds [2].

Ginger root capsules 1400mg: the label facts

The whole-root panel has a single line: organic ginger root. A serving of two capsules provides 1,400mg, and each pouch holds 45 servings; the two asterisks mean no NRV established [4].

Nutrition information panel of Alpha01 Organic Ginger Root 1400mg: serving size 2 capsules, 45 servings, organic ginger root 1,400mg, no NRV established

What 1400mg per serving means: 700mg of whole root in each capsule

A 1,400mg serving is the weight of the root itself, provided in two capsules of 700mg. Because nothing has been concentrated, there is no ratio to convert [4]. The ingredients list shows organic ginger root powder first, followed by the hypromellose shell and organic brown rice flour, and the pouch front adds 90 vegan capsules and a 45 day supply [4].

Ginger root extract on the label: 7,500mg from 15:1, providing 25mg gingerols

The panel of the 7,500mg extract reads differently. It lists organic ginger root 7,500mg from 15:1 extract, providing 25mg gingerols in one capsule, with the same note: no NRV established [4].

1,400mg ÷ 2 = 700mg of whole root in each capsule · £9.99 ÷ 45 = about 22p a day · 7,500mg ÷ 15 = 500mg of extract in the capsule · 500mg × 5% = 25mg of gingerols, the figure on the panel · the 3,750mg capsule is half of each: 250mg of extract and 12.5mg of gingerols.

The label maths

Organic Ginger Root 1400mg, Organic Ginger Extract 7,500mg and 3,750mg: nutrition panels and prices [4]

What 15:1 extract means: 500mg in the capsule

A 15:1 extract means that 15 parts of root were reduced to 1 part of extract. So the 7,500mg on the front is the root equivalent, and the capsule holds 500mg of extract, with organic brown rice flour to fill the space and a hypromellose shell [4].

What 5% gingerols means: 25mg you can count

The ingredients list reads organic ginger root 15:1 extract (5% gingerols). That means 5% of the 500mg of extract is gingerols, which gives the 25mg on the panel [4]. So the panel tells you two things: how much root the extract came from, and how much of ginger’s own compounds is in each capsule.

Organic ginger: the leaf logo and non-EU agriculture

The green leaf on the front of each pouch is the EU organic logo. Beside it, the certifier’s code and the words non-EU agriculture show that the ginger root was grown outside the EU under organic rules [4]. All three pouches belong to our organic range.

Ginger root capsules or ginger extract: which is right for you?

We offer three ginger capsules, with the same plant in two forms. You can choose the whole root, milled, or a concentrated extract.

Ginger root capsules 1400mg: the whole root, milled

Would you rather have the rhizome as it is, dried and milled with nothing concentrated? Our Organic Ginger Root 1400mg capsules give you 1,400mg of whole root powder in two vegan capsules a day, for 45 days at about 22p a day [4].

Ginger extract 7,500mg: 25mg gingerols in one capsule

If you’d rather take one capsule a day and know exactly how much gingerol you’re getting, our Organic Ginger Extract 7,500mg gives you 25mg of gingerols from 500mg of 15:1 extract, and a pouch lasts 90 days at about 11p a day [4].

Turmeric and ginger: ginger in our own blends

You’ll also find ginger in our Organic Turmeric & Ginger 1440mg capsules, alongside organic turmeric and black pepper. Every two capsules give you 1,350mg of organic turmeric, providing 67.5mg of curcuminoids, plus 80mg of organic ginger and 10mg of organic black pepper, for about 16p a day [5]. Our turmeric and ginger guide takes you through the blend.

Our Turmeric Extract 4000mg tablets pair the two as extracts: two tablets give 3,000mg of turmeric root from a 60:1 extract, providing 47.5mg of curcuminoids, and 1,000mg of ginger root from a 20:1 extract, for about 13p a day [6]. Ginger is also an ingredient in three other products: 75mg of organic ginger in three Organic Apple Cider Vinegar 1920mg capsules, 50mg of ginger root from a 5:1 extract in two Apple Cider Vinegar 1000mg gummies, and 720mg of ginger root from a 20:1 extract in two Glucosamine & Chondroitin 1000mg capsules [6].

You’ll find all three ginger pouches in our herbal supplements range. If you’re curious about a different plant that shares the name, see our black ginger guide.

How to take ginger root capsules: the daily dose on each label

The whole-root label asks for two capsules daily with water, so a pouch of 90 lasts 45 days. Each extract label asks for one capsule daily, so its pouch lasts 90 days [4].

The labels give no time of day, so keep the pouch by a meal you never skip. Store it in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, as the label directs [4].

45 days of organic ginger root

If two capsules of the whole root a day suit your routine, a pouch of 90 covers 45 days for £9.99, about 22p a day.

Ginger root capsules FAQs

1. What are ginger root capsules good for?

UK law lets a food supplement carry only the health claims authorised on the Great Britain register, and none has been authorised for ginger or Zingiber officinale [1]. What you can be sure of is on the label: 1,400mg of organic ginger root in two capsules, or 7,500mg from a 15:1 extract in one, providing 25mg of gingerols [4].

2. Is ginger extract stronger than ginger root?

It is more concentrated: 500mg of 15:1 extract stands for 7,500mg of root and declares 25mg of gingerols [4]. The whole-root capsules give you 1,400mg of the dried and milled root itself, so your choice is between the whole root and a declared gingerol figure [4].

3. What are gingerols in ginger root?

The compounds that give ginger its heat, led by 6-gingerol [2]. Drying and heat turn some of them into shogaols.

4. What does 15:1 extract mean on ginger capsules?

That 15 parts of root were reduced to 1 part of extract, so the capsule holds 500mg of extract for the 7,500mg of root on the front [4].

5. Are ginger capsules vegan?

Yes. The capsule shells are made from hypromellose, a plant-derived cellulose, and the filler is organic brown rice flour. The whole-root pouch front says vegan capsules, and all three pouches sit in our vegan range [4].

6. Can I take ginger every day?

Yes. Each label gives a daily amount, two capsules of the whole root or one of either extract, so they are made for daily use; just don’t take more than the label says [4]. The capsules are not intended for children, and the extract labels add pregnant or breastfeeding women; each label asks you to check with a doctor first if you have a medical condition or take medication, and the whole-root label if you are pregnant or breastfeeding [4].

7. Is organic ginger root the same as black ginger?

No. Black ginger is a different plant, Kaempferia parviflora, and our black ginger guide covers it.

8. How much do ginger root capsules cost a day?

It depends on the format. Two whole-root capsules cost about 22p a day, one 7,500mg extract capsule about 11p and one 3,750mg capsule about 7.8p [4].

So, ginger root capsules or ginger extract?

If you would rather have the whole rhizome, milled and nothing more, the Organic Ginger Root 1400mg capsules are the root as Marco Polo would have known it, at about 22p a day. If you want the certainty of a declared gingerol figure in one capsule, choose the Organic Ginger Extract 7,500mg at about 11p a day.
