Whether in a pie, a jam or a deep red juice, you will know the distinctly sharp flavour of the sour cherry. It is the kind of fruit often too tart to eat by the handful, and you may have also seen it called Montmorency, which is simply one of its well known varieties [1]. On a supplement pouch, this name is often followed by a number that can seem puzzling: 15,000mg. Understanding what this figure truly represents is the key to knowing what is inside the capsule, as it is not the physical weight of the powder but a measure of the whole fruit used to create it [4].
Navigating the world of food supplements can feel overwhelming. This guide explains what 15,000mg, 60:1 and 12.5mg mean on our pouch, and how one capsule a day fits your routine.

Montmorency cherry capsules at a glance
- What they are: Montmorency tart cherry, concentrated into a 60:1 extract, in a vegan capsule [4].
- What 15,000mg means: the cherries that went in. The capsule itself holds 250mg of extract.
- What 12.5mg means: the anthocyanins, the fruit’s red pigments, which make up 5% of that extract.
- How to take them: one capsule a day with water, 90 days to a pouch.
- Price: £8.99, about 10p a day.
- Who they suit: you, if you want Montmorency cherry in your routine without the sharp taste, the sugar of a juice or stained fingers.

Why tart cherry capsules rather than juice or the fruit?
Capsule, juice or the fruit itself? If you want tart cherry every day without the sharp taste or the sugar of a juice, the capsule is the simple answer.
Tart cherry capsules: the sour cherry without the sour
Want the cherry without the tang? Our Raw Tart Cherry Extract 15,000mg capsules are a simple one a day with water.
Each capsule is made from a 60:1 extract, so the 15,000mg on the label is the fruit it came from. A pouch of 90 lasts three months for £8.99, about 10p a day, and the plant-derived shell puts the capsules in our vegan range.
Juicing releases the fruit’s sugars [5], and the fresh fruit is too sharp to eat by the handful: one capsule a day gives you tart cherry without either.
The capsules sit among our herbal supplements and in our Daily Wellbeing range. Acerola is a different fruit altogether, covered in our acerola cherry guide, and another dark fruit sold by its anthocyanins is in our blackcurrant guide.
Tart cherry extract on the label: what 15,000mg, 60:1 and 12.5mg mean
The 15,000mg is the tart cherry behind every capsule. That big number is a fruit equivalent, the cherries the extract inside was made from, and the panel says so: Montmorency Tart Cherry (from 60:1 extract), sixty parts of fruit concentrated into one part of extract.

15,000mg of tart cherry ÷ 60 = 250mg of extract in the capsule · 5% of 250mg = 12.5mg of anthocyanins · 90 capsules at one a day = three months · £8.99 ÷ 90 = about 10p a day.
Raw Tart Cherry Extract 15,000mg, nutrition panel [4]
The big number, then, describes the fruit that went in, while the 250mg describes the extract inside the capsule. This is how concentrated extracts are usually labelled. Our panel and our ingredients list both print the 60:1 ratio.
You can check the second line, 12.5mg anthocyanins, in the same way. The ingredients list says the extract holds 5% anthocyanins, and 5% of 250mg is 12.5mg.

What is tart cherry, and what are anthocyanins?
Tart cherry and sour cherry are two names for the same fruit, Prunus cerasus [2]. It isn’t the sweet cherry from the summer punnet: think of the sharp cooking cherries that stain your fingers red.
What sets it apart is its colour. Sour cherries contain high levels of anthocyanins, the pigments that make the fruit and its juice so red [2]. The main one in sour cherry juice has a name only a chemist could love: cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside [3].
The 12.5mg on our label is the total of these anthocyanins in each capsule’s extract, and it is printed on the front of the pouch as well as on the panel.
Montmorency cherry on the label: what the name tells you
Montmorency is a variety of sour cherry, and the front of our pouch prints the species under it: Prunus cerasus [1]. The only other ingredients are organic brown rice flour and the plant-derived capsule shell.
How to take tart cherry capsules
It couldn’t be simpler: the label says one capsule daily with water, and it names no time of day. Pick a time and stick to it, and keep the pouch in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight and out of reach of young children.
The capsules are not intended for children, or for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Sour cherries, minus the sour
If you want tart cherry without the sharpness, our capsules are a simple one a day with water: a printed 60:1 ratio, 12.5mg of anthocyanins, and three months to a pouch at a rather friendly 10p a day.

Tart cherry capsules FAQs
1. What are the benefits of tart cherry capsules?
UK rules authorise no health claim for tart cherry, so we list none [1]. What a capsule does offer is practical: tart cherry in your day without the sharp taste or the sugar of a juice, from a label that prints its ratio.
2. What is the dosage of tart cherry extract capsules?
Our label says one capsule daily with water. That capsule holds 250mg of a 60:1 extract, which the label expresses as 15,000mg of tart cherry.
3. Is a 60:1 tart cherry extract different from a 30:1?
Yes, a 60:1 extract is twice as concentrated as a 30:1. Ours concentrates 15,000mg of Montmorency tart cherry into 250mg of extract, in one capsule a day.
4. Is Montmorency cherry the same as tart cherry?
Montmorency is one variety of tart cherry, which is also called sour cherry [1][2]. All three names on the shelf describe the species Prunus cerasus.
5. Do tart cherry capsules count as one of my 5 A Day?
No. The NHS counts the fruit itself: 30g of dried fruit or around 80g of fresh [5]. The capsule is tart cherry in a form you swallow with water, alongside whatever is in your fruit bowl.
6. Are your tart cherry capsules vegan?
Yes. The shell is hypromellose, which is plant-derived, and the only other ingredient besides the extract is organic brown rice flour.
7. Can I take tart cherry capsules every day?
Yes. The label is written for one capsule a day with water, so a pouch of 90 covers three months of that routine.
For tart cherry every day without the sharpness or the sugar of a juice, take one of our Raw Tart Cherry Extract 15,000mg capsules with water, for about 10p a day.
