THE ALPHA01 GUIDE VITAMIN E
Vitamin E Capsules
200 IU or 400 IU: Which Strength Is Right for You?
IU, milligrams and %NRV.
A clearer look at the numbers on your pouch.
· 12 min read

Have you turned over a pouch of vitamin E and found three numbers for one capsule, 400 IU, 268mg and 2,233%, and wondered which one matters? All three describe one amount of one vitamin, and vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress 1. The NHS names plant oils such as sunflower and olive oil, nuts and seeds, and wheatgerm as good sources of vitamin E 2. One capsule a day adds a measured amount of it, whatever the week’s cooking brings.
But choosing one is where the numbers start to matter. Our vitamin E comes as 200 IU or 400 IU in one vegan capsule, in the natural form named on the front, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate, and as organic vitamin E from sunflower seed oil. This guide explains what IU and milligrams mean, how natural and synthetic vitamin E differ and which capsule fits your day.

01 / FIND YOUR STRENGTH
Vitamin E 200 IU or 400 IU: which capsule is right for you?
Every one of our vitamin E capsules carries the same authorised sentence, because it belongs to vitamin E, not to the strength 1. What differs is the amount in each capsule, the source and the price a day.

Taking vitamin E with a multivitamin: 12mg to 20mg a day
Already taking a multivitamin? Two of our multivitamins carry vitamin E: 20mg α-TE in one MultiVitamin & Minerals tablet and 12mg in two Women’s Multivitamins tablets 3. Our vegan collagen capsule gives 12mg as well, so a 400 IU capsule sits easily beside any one of them 3.
02 / THE EVERYDAY VITAMIN
How much vitamin E do you need a day? What the NHS says
The NHS gives two figures: 4mg a day for men and 3mg a day for women 2. It describes the vitamin this way: “Vitamin E is a group of compounds found in a wide variety of foods.” 2
03 / READ THE LABEL
Vitamin E on the label: IU, mg α-TE and %NRV explained
Three numbers, one capsule: the panel of our 400 IU capsule reads 268mg α-TE (400 IU) and 2,233%, and all three describe the same amount of vitamin E 3. Here is how they fit together.
Nutritional Information
Serving Size: 1 Capsule
Servings Per Container: 90
| Nutrient | Amount per Serving | %NRV* |
|---|---|---|
| Vitamin E | 268mg α-TE (400 IU) | 2,233% |
*Nutrient Reference Value
IU stands for international units, an older way of expressing vitamin E activity, and α-TE for alpha-tocopherol equivalents, the milligram figure on the panel 4. One IU equals 0.67mg of the natural form, which is why 400 IU reads as 268mg 4.
reference value
Vitamin E 200 IU, 400 IU and 1000 IU, nutrition panels and prices 3
The third number, %NRV, compares the amount with the nutrient reference value, 12mg for vitamin E, which is why 268mg reads as 2,233% 3.
Natural vitamin E or synthetic: d-alpha and dl-alpha on the label
The alpha-tocopherol in food is one natural form, RRR-alpha-tocopherol, also written d-alpha, and supplements carry either that form or a synthetic mixture of eight forms, all-rac or dl-alpha 4. Our 200 IU, 400 IU and 1000 IU capsules name the natural form on the front, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate 3. Tocopheryl acetate is vitamin E bound to acetic acid, an ester, and supplements are commonly sold as esters of either form 4.
Organic vitamin E: sunflower seed oil and cassava root
The organic capsules carry the natural form itself, organic d-alpha tocopherol, rather than an ester, so there is no acetate on this label 3. The pouch front carries the EU organic logo with the code SK-BIO-003 and the words sunflower seeds & cassava root.
04 / WHAT THE REGISTER SAYS
Vitamin E benefits: the claim UK rules authorise
In the UK a food supplement may carry only the health claims authorised on the Great Britain Nutrition and Health Claims Register 1. A vitamin E claim needs 15% of the reference value, which is 1.8mg a day, and every capsule here gives far more.
Every health claim on the Great Britain register passed a scientific review: independent scientists examined the research and the evidence behind it before it was authorised 1. The law itself says that health claims shall be “based on and substantiated by generally accepted scientific evidence” 5.
Vitamin E on the register: the authorised sentence
Here it is, word for word 1:
It applies in full to every strength we make, because the sentence belongs to vitamin E itself.
Vitamin E and vitamin C: the sentence that names vitamin E
Vitamin C holds an authorised sentence of its own that names vitamin E, quoted here word for word 1:
It is a vitamin C claim, carried by our products with vitamin C at the level it needs, from liposomal vitamin C to our multivitamins, so the two vitamins can share one routine.
05 / KEEP IT SIMPLE
How to take vitamin E capsules
Follow your capsule label
The label asks for one capsule daily with water, or two for the organic capsules 3. It names no time of day, so pick a moment that is already part of your day, such as breakfast, and store the pouch in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight.
A SIMPLE DAILY ROUTINE
90 days of vitamin E 400 IU
If one capsule a day suits your routine, the 400 IU pouch covers three months for £5.99, about 6.7p a day: the same price as the 200 IU, with twice the vitamin E in every capsule.

Vitamin E capsules FAQs
What are the benefits of vitamin E capsules?
UK law authorises one health claim for vitamin E: vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress 1. Every capsule here meets the claim’s condition many times over, from 134mg in the 200 IU to 268mg in a 400 IU serving.
How much vitamin E a day do adults need?
The NHS figures are 4mg a day for men and 3mg for women 2.
Is 400 IU of vitamin E too much?
Not by the NHS figure: 400 IU is 268mg, just under half the 540mg (800 IU) a day the NHS gives for supplements 2 3. One capsule a day keeps you well within it. Our 1000 IU capsule, at 670mg, is above that figure, so follow its label: one capsule a day, under a practitioner’s guidance and not for long term use 3.
How many mg is 400 IU of vitamin E?
What is the difference between d-alpha and dl-alpha vitamin E?
Is there a vegan vitamin E capsule?
Yes. The pouch fronts say vegan capsules: the shell is hypromellose, and the other ingredients are the vitamin E and organic brown rice flour 3.
Can children take vitamin E capsules?
The labels advise against it: the 400 IU and organic capsules are “not intended for children”, and the 200 IU capsule is “not intended for children under the age of 15 years” 3.
Can I take vitamin E every day?
Yes, at the amount on the label: one capsule a day, or two of the organic capsules 3. Each pouch is sized for it, 90 days for the 200 IU and 400 IU and 30 servings for the organic capsules.
THE BOTTOM LINE
So, which vitamin E?
For one capsule a day, choose the Vitamin E 400 IU at about 6.7p a day, the 200 IU at the same price for a smaller amount, or the 1000 IU for more in one capsule. For certified organic vitamin E from sunflower seed oil, the Organic Vitamin E 400 IU gives the same 268mg in two capsules. Whichever you choose, you get the same authorised benefit: vitamin E contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress 1.
